Gangbangers With Pit Bulls?

Posted on 22:48 by election
I just returned home from a very lovely and positive celebration with family and friends and then made the mistake of reading the New Yorker's review of Pieter Hugo's show at Yossi Milo. I quickly soured on humanity and the young year's promise of a more perfect world. The magazine that is typically a bastion of progressive values referred to Pieter's subjects as "merely exotic versions of U.S.

This was a remarkable achievement for someone who has been eating,

Party Like a Rockstar

Tastykakes and Gumbo

Posted on 11:34 by election
© Zoe StraussSaturday we hit up Chelsea to see Kelli Connell's show at Yossi Milo and Elijah Gowin at Robert Mann. Great stuff, but we were really just biding our time waiting for the main event: Zoe Strauss' big solo show, If You Reading This, at Silverstein Gallery.Zoe's prints looked great and the images were all very strong. And, there was a decidedly un-Chelsea feel to the festivities. It

Critical Mass Results Announced

Posted on 16:49 by election
© Lori Nix 1999The results are in for Photolucida's Critical Mass Book Award and I am one of the five finalists for the softbound monograph prize. Two of the five finalists will be selected and Photolucida will publish monographs of their work. I believe the plan is to put us in a steel cage with rusty spoons and the last two standing get the prize. I'm scrappy and focused, so look out,

Benefit for Do You Know What It Means Project

Posted on 18:04 by election
As some of you may know, I have spent the past year working as Executive Director of the Do You Know What It Means project. A good chunk of that time was spent in New Orleans collecting thousands of photographs and interviewing hundreds of community members to get the project up and running. The mission of the project is to use those photos and stories to create a permanent record of life

Griffin Museum Juried Show

Posted on 21:02 by election
The winners were just announced for the 13th Annual Juried Show at the Griffin Photography Museum and I was fortunate to be awarded with a two person show in the Griffin's Emerging Artist Gallery. The juror this year was the always wonderful Brian Clamp. Past winners of the two person show include Rachel Papo and Dorthe Alstrup. Talk about being in great company. It's always nice when you can

Pro or Con?

Posted on 20:23 by election
© Amy Stein 2002An interesting discussion about my Women and Guns series is taking place on the bulletin board, TheHighRoad.org. The site says that it is "dedicated to the discussion and advancement of responsible firearms ownership." Ignoring the thread about the quality of the photos (they kick ass, thank you), the members of The High Road can't seem to decide if the photos are anti-gun. Do

This Blog Thing

Posted on 08:25 by election
I started this blog thing a year ago mainly as a means to post periodic updates about my emerging photography career. At the time I was knee deep in grad school, so I wasn't so much emerging as abiding. Over the months I started posting one-off photos and work that didn't quite make it into the portfolio. I also began to write a little less about my favorite subject (me!) and a little more

Mission Accomplished

Posted on 09:09 by election
Four years ago today our president strode cocksure on to the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln and declared, "my fellow Americans, major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed." Four years later we are on the eve of the president vetoing the Iraq spending bill that sets timetables for withdrawal. Four years later with

My Kind of Town... Part 2

Posted on 06:48 by election
A Motive For Change © Carlos and Jason Sanchez 2004Right off the bat I have to confess that art fairs make me uneasy. It's like a field trip to the sausage factory. I am happier not knowing about this uncomely, but necessary side of the art world engine. Given my art fair apprehension, our trip to Art Chicago was a mixed bag. I appreciate seeing individual pieces by photographers I respect,

My Kind of Town...

Posted on 20:53 by election
Just back from three fabulous days in the Windy City. More on the trip later, but quick highlights include the 43rd Annual Versionfest Photographic Invitation, Art Chicago, staying with Matt and Betsy, cheap beers with Alec Soth, hanging with Julian Montague, and Sunday brunch with the crew. The Chicago photography scene is tight, focused, and just plain fun. Again, more detail later, but

Come On Feel the Illinoise!

Posted on 19:25 by election
I have finally cracked the inner sanctum of the Loyal Order of Chicagraphers. Grand Poobahs, Brian Ulrich and Jon Gitelson, have curated the 43rd Annual Versionfest Photographic Invitational and graciously invited this New Yorker to commune with the Chi-town faithful. I have spent the better part of a month practicing for the initiation ceremony, but I'm still not sure if I need to provide my

Every Story Takes a Picture

© Alison Brady 2006New York Magazine highlights images from three photographers currently showing in New York galleries. The three photographers, Lisa Kereszi, Alison Brady, and Kelli Connell, happen to be three of my favorites and all happen to be women. I mention they are women because, sadly, the paucity of wall and written space committed to female artists in this city makes this a rare and

Kenny the Retarded White Tiger

Posted on 18:42 by election
© Taryn SimonLast week I attended a lecture by Taryn Simon at Aperture. Taryn has always inspired me and I find a lot of parallels between our approach to photography. The lecture was great and I learned a bit about her process, but I walked away fascinated by her image of Kenny, a retarded white tiger, from the series, An Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar. It would be safe to say that Kenny
